Fruit flies

Information 

We have two types of fruit flies in our assortment, sold pro box.

• The large fruit fly (Drosophila hydei)
• The small fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster)

The small fruit fly needs less time to develop than the big fruit flies. We ship the fruit flies in three stages:

• Feeding-ground with a number of flies, these have laid their eggs in the feeding-ground. These eggs will develop from larva, pupa to fly.
• Feeding-ground with larva. These have to develop into pupa and then into fly.
• Feeding-ground with pupated larva and emerging flies. (These are only available in limited amounts and only upon request).

Both species have anomalous wings and therefore aren’t able to fly. This is what makes them suitable for small frogs, small birds (amongst others. hummingbirds) and young reptiles.

Care

Housing

Fruit flies can be stored in the supplied packaging.

Temperature

Preferably between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. No direct sunlight! In case the pupating stage needs to be postponed, store in lower temperatures 15 to 18 degrees Celsius.

Nourishment

They could be fed some small pieces of banana to make sure that all larvae receive enough nourishment in order to develop. It is important to keep the feeding-ground dampened: for example by putting a wet piece of paper-towel or cotton wool on top of it.
